Used for determining the theoretical maximum specific gravity of uncompacted bituminous paving mixtures.
Large size piknometers can also be used for the calculation of the percent of air voids in compacted bituminous mixtures and the amount of bitumen absorbed by the aggregates.
CONTROLS offer three models:
75-D1122 heavy duty version, 10000 ml cap., specially designed for this application, made from robust transparent plastic and fit with vacuum gauge, coupling for vacuum application and vent valve. Suitable for paving mixtures samples of max. 6000 g, with maximum aggregate size of 50 mm (2”).
75-D1123/C aluminium canister 4500 ml cap., with transparent lid, fit with vacuum gauge, coupling for vacuum application and vent valve. Suitable for paving mixture sample of max. 2000 g, with max. aggregate size of 19.1 mm (¾”).
75-D1123/D 10000 ml cap., made from plastic with transparent cover, fit with vacuum gauge, coupling for vacuum application and vent valve. Suitable for paving mixtures sample of max. 6000 g, with max. aggregate size of 50 mm (2”).
All the above vacuum pyknometers have to be shaked gently for the evacuation of air by the 15-D0407/C vibro-deaerator, complete with timer.

The SGA-5R Gilson Rice Shaker for Specific Gravity & Asphalt Rice Test performs consistent, automatic agitation of Asphalt Rice Test vacuum pycnometers for deairing, freeing lab technicians for other duties. It is also a useful de-airing agitator for specific gravity tests of fine aggregates (ASTM C128) and soils (ASTM D854), as well as sample preconditioning per ASTM D4867 and AASHTO T 283.
SGA-5RT has modified vibration characteristics to meet Texas DOT requirements.
The Rice Shaker features a built-in 0-99 min., 59 sec. digital timer with ±0.25 second accuracy, a vibration speed controller and a three position switch for manual or timed operation—all front panel mounted for easy use. Variable speed settings closely control agitation to avoid stripping of asphalt.
Gilson's exclusive EZ Clamp System quickly secures pycnometers. Push the buttons, slide into place and a quick twist secures the container. The kit includes rods and threaded speed knobs that tilt to slide freely on or off the rods, then tighten with a few turns to secure clamping.
The SGA-5R includes fitted top and bottom plates for exact fit with SG-16A 2,000g or SG-18A 4,000g Aluminum Pycnometers. Pycnometers come with:
Transparent Vacuum Lid, Tapered Aluminum Lid with Capillary Bore, Threaded Vacuum Aspirator and Tubing included.
MA-170 Digital Residual Pressure Manometer precisely measures applied vacuum during testing. NIST certified model is available as MA-170C.
SG-35 AutoRice™ Digital Manometer / Controller precisely measures vacuum and regulates the vacuum pressure setting and time. The device can also be equipped to monitor shaker vibration energy during theoretical maximum specific gravity testing (Rice Test) of hot-mix asphalt samples. Careful control of these three important factors can mean dramatic improvements in inter-laboratory repeatability and accuracy. Variations in acceleration and frequency energy produced by rice shakers can create repeatability issues as well as cause stripping of the sample.
With the push of a button, the AutoRice™ Controller starts the vacuum pump, regulates vacuum pressure, controls vacuum time and displays vacuum pressure. The optional SGA-126 Shaker Sensor is purchased separately, attaches to the pycnometer and is connected to the controller’s USB port to measure vibration acceleration and frequency. Data from the sensor can be used to calculate a “shaker factor” to establish proper vibration levels.
SG-36 AutoRice™ Digital Manometer / Controller w/ PumpSaver™ Air Drier has the same capabilities as the SG-35 AutoRice unit, but additionally comes with the SGA-128 PumpSaver™ Air Drier. Both models operate on nominal 120 to 240V/50 or 60Hz electrical supplies.
